Syrian Emergency Task Force

Nonprofit or community organization

Last modified: September 14, 2012, 8:57 PM

Our Mission:

To organize, mobilize and empower the Syrian American community and our partners in order to play a positive role in public policy regarding Syria and the Middle East, supporting the democratic aspirations of the Syrian people, improving the lives of average Syrian people, strengthening the rule of law and helping in transitioning Syria into a viable, inclusive, diverse, democratic state.

Our Vision:

To realize the Syrian people's aspiration in Life, Liberty and Pursuit of Happiness and build strong ties between the American and Syrian people.

We are a group of volunteers who believe in the value of freedom and human rights for all people. Many of us are first or second generation Syrian-Americans who came together after seeing the violent reaction of the Syrian government to the pro-democracy protesters and decided we could not stay silent while our brothers and sisters in Syria face the cruelty and oppression of the regime. We created the Syrian Emergency Task Force to raise awareness in the United States concerning the violent history of the Assad regime and the continuing oppression the people suffer every day. As the protests grew and the killing escalated we began collecting information from victims and documenting human rights violations.

We filed a lawsuit on May 11, 2011 to begin the process of bringing these crimes to justice. The defendants in the case will include members of the Syrian government from the "Mukhabarat" officer who pulled the trigger to the leaders of the regime and everyone in between. The number of brave individuals willing to come forward to add their experience and share how they have been affected by these horrific crimes is inspiring and makes the case against the regime even stronger.

We have satellite groups that have been working to coordinate with our main D.C. office and their community in Chicago, California, Texas, New Jersey and New York. The work we do to document the killing, torture and detainment it so important to ensure that these crimes do not go unpunished and the calls for freedom the people of Syria are dying for do not go unheard.
