Brooklyn Yoga Cooperative

About Us

Brooklyn Yoga Cooperative is a worker owned and operated studio. Unlike many other yoga studios, BYC is managed democratically by the instructors. In a worker cooperative, workers own their jobs, and thus have a direct stake in the local environment, as well as the power to do business in a way that is sustainable for all. Worker cooperatives tend to create long-term stable jobs, sustainable business practices, and linkages among different parts of the social economy.

BYC's instructors are a diverse group of yoga practitioners and educators with unique backgrounds and stylistic approaches to yoga. The collective focus currently includes classical Hatha, Iyengar, and Vinyasa flow traditions. While the classes and teaching styles may vary, BYC is tied together by a bold dedication to sharing the teachings and benefits of yoga in a way that is accessible to everyone. All levels and bodies are welcome.

BYC operates with a sliding scale pricing model for classes. Many students cannot afford to regularly attend yoga classes at standard industry rates. Because BYC's mission is to make yoga classes accessible to the community, we offer classes that will be affordable to a wide spectrum of people. We think that being fair doesn't necessarily mean everyone pays the same, but it does mean that everyone has the opportunity to study yoga. Therefore, we allow students to determine for themselves what price within the $7-15 range they are most comfortable paying each time they attend class. The expectation is that those who are more comfortable financially will choose to pay at the higher end, while those with less financial flexibility will pay a more affordable price toward the lower end of the scale. All are welcome to practice at BYC, and no one will be turned away for financial reasons.

BYC is dedicated to making its classes available to all and is eager to work with the community to ensure that this happens.

BYC is being incubated by LaunchPad, a non-profit community gathering place in Crown Heights, Brooklyn.
