Kings County Tennis League (KCTL) was founded in 2010 under Marcy Tennis Club Inc, to bring free Saturday tennis clinics to children of the Bedford-Stuyvesant (Bed-Stuy) neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY. With numerous public housing communities located nearby, our clinics target children from low-income families who previously have had little or no exposure to the game of tennis. Our mission is to promote the game by using tennis as an instrument for positive mentorship and community building. By coupling the children's excitement with positive mentoring, we teach tennis as the sport of opportunity. We now teach over 100 children across four different public housing communities: Marcy, Tompkins, Lafayette Gardens, and Sumner Houses.
Our volunteers come from a diverse professional background: lawyers, chefs, scientists, artists, and students just to name a few. We beleive that by exposing children from low income families to volunteers from a wide range of professional backgrounds through tennis, we will help them reach their full potential. Each year the volunteers organize a community service project with the kids. We take them to the US Open. We also organize a community tennis tournament where kids from all four housing communitites can play together. At the end of the day, we are mentors first, tennis instructors second.
