AFRIpads (U) Ltd. is a pro-poor social business founded in 2009 that locally manufactures and sells low-cost, cloth (washable) sanitary pads. The company is a registered business in Uganda, limited by shares, with a parent company in The Netherlands. AFRIpads (U) Ltd.'s core objective is to address the high rates of school girl absenteeism due to the lack of affordable menstrual products by locally manufacturing a practical sanitary product innovation. The company's first product is the "AFRIpads Menstrual Kit" – a cloth sanitary pad kit that provides effective, hygienic menstrual protection for up to 1-year, making it a smart, cost-saving menstrual product solution for both schoolgirls and women. AFRIpads (U) Ltd. sells the majority of its products to NGOs operating in East Africa that support the menstrual hygiene needs of their female beneficiaries. The company has also forged several partnerships with NGOs working at the community level to develop local distribution channels and sales points to increase end-user consumer access to the product. The company's manufacturing site is located in Masaka District where it employs 45 young women in the production process. The company also has a sales office and warehouse located in Bukoto, Kampala.
