The Magnum Foundation was created in 2007 to support the production of documentary photography and use of visual imagery to promote positive social change. The Foundation believes that such change comes about through rigorous, independent documentation; active collaboration with other grass-roots and media organizations on distribution strategies; and through the innovative presentation and exhibition of historical work.
The Magnum Foundation operates four primary programs: Production and distribution of in-depth independent work, including through the Foundation's Emergency Fund and BE SEEN initiatives; awards and grants to aspiring photojournalists; the preservation and exhibition of historic documentary photography archives; and education, which includes a co-administered program at NYU.
