Program description

The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) works in more than 190 countries and territories to save and improve children's lives, providing health care and immunizations, clean water and sanitation, nutrition, education, emergency relief, and more. The U.S. Fund for UNICEF (USF) supports UNICEF's work through fundraising, advocacy, and education in the United States. Together, we are working toward the day when ZERO children die from preventable causes and every child has a safe and healthy childhood. For more information, please visit unicefusa.org.

Global Citizenship Fellowship Overview: In January 2013, eight Global Citizenship Fellows will begin work with the U.S. Fund for UNICEF Program and Strategic Partnerships Division in the following locations: Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, New York City, San Francisco, and Washington D.C. The fellowship is a highly-selective, full-time, 13 month program that prepares diverse, committed, and globally-minded individuals for effective leadership in public service. By helping to establish UNICEF's domestic imprint, the Fellows will exemplify the concept of the "global citizen" as someone who understands global interconnectedness, respects and values diversity, has the ability to challenge injustice and inequalities, and takes action in a way that is personally meaningful. Fellows will aim to inspire their communities to take action for the world's children by engaging local groups and cultivating awareness.

The Fellows' primary function will be to support the core functions and goals of four USF departments: Education, Volunteer and Community Partnerships (VCP), the Office of Strategic Partnerships (OSP), and the Office of Public Policy and Advocacy (OPPA). The three main areas of the work plan are outreach, partnership development, and program implementation for the following domestic initiatives: Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF, TeachUNICEF, UNICEF High School clubs, UNICEF Campus Initiative and Alumni, UNICEF Tap Project, the End Trafficking campaign, advocacy initiatives, and other community mobilization activities.

Core Objectives and Key Responsibilities for Global Citizenship Fellows

Building on the work of the previous class, fellows will:

  • Explore new, and foster existing, relationships with community and faith-based organizations and identify opportunities for partnerships to increase awareness of UNICEF's work
  • Inspire and support volunteers who will engage their communities in Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF, the UNICEF Tap Project, mobilization when emergencies occur, and other initiatives
  • Catalyze school partnerships by inspiring educators to teach students about global issues and providing a platform for children to learn about their peers worldwide through TeachUNICEF
  • Recruit local volunteers, teachers, afterschool programs, and nonprofits to participate in UNICEF domestic initiatives and lead orientation(s), meetings, and trainings around our signature initiatives, campaigns, and work in the field
  • Represent UNICEF in the community at relevant convenings, events, and coalitions
  • Find creative ways to engage targeted audiences in each fellows respective location

Fellows will work closely with regional office staff, but will report remotely to the Global Citizenship Program Officer in New York. Through weekly phone calls, bi-weekly reports, updated project plans, and participation in an online forum, USF staff will monitor progress and assist Fellows in meeting their own personal and project objectives. Periodic workshops, activities, trainings, and other professional development activities will be a part of Fellows' continuing education and support structure. The Global Citizenship Fellowship also offers:

  • A deep understanding of complex, global issues facing the world's children
  • Training in UNICEF domestic initiatives, program and curriculum design, metrics and reporting, development and relationship building, group training, and consensus building
  • Leadership skills development in problem-solving, volunteer engagement, community outreach, event planning, nonprofit management, communication, public speaking, creating and implementing workshops, and program management
