Young Women Rock!: After-School Program in Brownsville/East New York (Brooklyn) for Girls 14-18

Posted on: April 18, 2013

Posted by: The Women Worldwide Initiative

Description

The Young Women Rock! Mentorship Program is dedicated to strengthening the lives and communities of young women in under-served neighborhoods through a curriculum based, group, and one-on-one mentorship program for high school girls aged 14 - 18 that includes weekly sessions each Thursday, and special cultural outings once a month.

The philosophy behind the YWR! curriculum is to empower young women by having them think critically about themselves, their identity and their goals, while breaking down negative messages fed to them by society and the media. Young Women Rock! supports young women to make informed decisions for themselves in the face of severe societal pressure, and illustrating that they have resources available to them to make smart decisions.

High School Curriculum Units:

  1. Self-Esteem and Self-Confidence Building
  2. Sexual Health and Decision-Making
  3. Broader Women's Issues and Future Options
  4. Community Service and Global Citizenship
