"For me, the great legacy for generations to come will be the new, young, and maturing people who have worked for me during the course of these 18 years."
- U.S. Senator Slade Gorton
About the Program
The Slade Gorton International Policy Center, located at The National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR), is pleased to announce that it is accepting applications for the Gorton Center Global Leaders Program, a nine-month leadership development program for up to 10 college or graduate students in the Puget Sound area beginning October 2013 through May 2014. The program is open to undergraduate (juniors and seniors), graduate, and law school students. The mission of the program is to enhance students' ability to make a positive global impact in their respective fields of study. Students will have exposure to, and learn from, Senator Gorton's extensive public service career and significant contributions to Washington State and the nation. It includes leadership lessons from his time as a Washington State legislator, House Majority Leader, 3-term Washington State Attorney General, 3-term U.S. Senator, 9/11 Commission member and Washington State Redistricting Commission member. The program is free of cost to accepted students and students of any academic major may apply.
The Global Leaders Program consists of three main components:
1.) Leadership Roundtables – Student participants will meet once a month, the first week of every month, starting October 3, 2013, from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. The meetings will be a private roundtable session to discuss a leadership or public policy issue with Senator Gorton and business leaders, policy makers, elected officials, and international experts from a variety of fields. Some of the confirmed speakers for the 2013-2014 program include:
• Dan Evans - former U.S. Senator and Washington State Governor
• Bill Ruckelshaus - Administrator EPA, acting Director of the FBI, Deputy Attorney general of the U.S. Department of Justice and CEO of Browning-Ferris Industries
• Mike Mckay - former U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Washington and founding partner of McKay Chadwell, PLLC
• Bill Bryant - Port of Seattle Commissioner & Chairman of Bryant Christie, Inc.
• Kent Patton - former Deputy Assistant Secretary, Near Eastern Affairs, U.S. State Department
2.) Mentorship – Students will have the opportunity to receive personal career guidance from Senator Gorton and Gorton Center staff. Through one-on-one meetings and networking opportunities, the student will receive valuable career guidance and leadership training.
3.) Policy Events – Students will be grouped into teams for the purposes of planning, organizing, and executing a policy event on a topic of their choice. Whether the program is a small roundtable or a large lecture, the event will be led by the students, under the guidance of the Gorton Center staff.
