Since 2003, SKIP has been working with disadvantaged families in an impoverished district of the city of Trujillo, Peru. Our holistic program focuses on the educational, economic, emotional and social development of each child and family. It is our aim to foster the capacity of children and families to be the principal agents of change in their own lives.
If you are looking for an alternative kind of intensive Spanish course, then look no further than our Volunteer and Learn Spanish Programme. We offer professional Spanish classes for people who are committed to working hard and learning the Spanish language. We are also able to work with Universities to provide internships and elective options for Univeristy courses.
SKIP has teamed up with the Peru Language School to be able to offer the opportunity to undertake an intensive Spanish course while volunteering at SKIP teaching English. Study and learn Spanish in Peru while you volunteer!!
Participants will study Spanish for 10 hours per week, in a professional setting and with a curriculum that has been designed to compliment the Spanish immersion experience where you are using the vocabulary and other skills you learn, on a daily basis. At the current time, lessons will be at a basic beginner to lower intermediate level.
This approach will help you to learn to speak Spanish more quickly as you will volunteer in a Spanish speaking environment.
Participants will then be able to further develop the Spanish language skills they are learning by volunteering at SKIP for around 20 hours per week, this will include time for lesson planning. Those who have not taught before should not worry, our English teaching programme uses a fully structured curriculum and is supervised by a qualified and experienced EFL teacher who will provide relevant training to help you develop teaching techniques. You will also co-teach lessons and so will not be alone in the classroom. Click here to read more about the English teaching programme.
Depending on your interests and vacancies, you can also volunteer teaching sports or arts and help in the library or in the nursery.
We do work hard at SKIP and applicants should be ready to apply themselves fully to their volunteer positions as do the other 25+ international volunteers. That said, there is time at evenings and weekends to relax, experience a bit of Latin America and visit local attractions such as Chan Chan, La Juaca de la Luna (The Temple of the Moon) and the beach at Huanchaco, which is renowned for having excellent waves to learn to surf and even hosts the annual long board world championship.
The programme runs for 8 weeks, this begins with an initial training week where volunteers learn Spanish and prepare for their volunteer teaching roles.
