Program description

The New York Civil Liberties Union, the New York state affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union, seeks members of the class of 2012, current judicial law clerks, or other fellowship applicants or recipients to sponsor for fellowships. For years, we have hosted fellows who have participated in litigation, lobbying, and advocacy on a wide range of issues.

The New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU) is one of the nation's foremost defenders of civil liberties and civil rights. Founded in 1951 as the New York affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union, the NYCLU is a not-for-profit, nonpartisan organization with eight offices and approximately 50,000 members statewide. The NYCLU defends the rights and freedoms embodied in the state and federal constitutions. We focus on freedom of speech, freedom of religion, the right to privacy, police misconduct, reproductive rights, disability right, youth and student rights, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights, voting rights, and the protections afforded those who come into contact with the criminal justice system. The NYCLU engages in various forms of advocacy, including litigation and public education.

Applicants must submit a resume, cover letter, two references, writing sample and project proposal by July 23rd if they are seeking sponsorship for a fellowship with a deadline on or before October 1st. We will consider other fellowship applications with deadlines after October 1st on a rolling basis.

All applicants should have a commitment to public interest law and to civil liberties. Applications should be emailed to fellowships@nyclu.org with "2012 Legal Fellowship" as the subject line. They may also be faxed to (212) 607-3318 or mailed to the following address:
