Ethical eating means more than local and organic ingredients — it means supporting the people throughout the food chain who bring food to your table. Come to Chicago, a nexus of America's food industry and economy, to learn how to use your power as a consumer to improve the lives of U.S. food workers.
Through experiential learning our participants cross boundaries, gain insight, and put their principles into action. UU College of Social Justice participants connect with grassroots organizations around the world and hone their skills to bring their experience home.
Working with the Restaurant Opportunities Centers United (ROC-United), you will learn about labor history, the injustices of the restaurant industry, and innovative organizing strategies. ROC-United, launched in January 2008, advocates for workplace justice with a membership of over 10,000 restaurant workers. With this partner organization of the UUCSJ, participants combine direct service with deep learning centered on addressing systems of oppression, protecting worker's rights, and understanding justice. This 5-day service learning program will equip you to be a faith-based consumer in the new food-justice movement.
Join us in Chicago, and answer the call to justice in our food system.
-Work closely with Restaurant Opportunities Centers United (ROC-United), meeting directly with workers and organizers and take part in on-the-ground action.
-Develop knowledge and skills you need to choose compassionate consumption and support people at the forefront of change in the food industry — and the drive to get involved when you return home.
-Develop an understading of dynamics of race, class, power, and privilege, and how they affect both your own life and in the lives of workers in the food industry.
