Background

The position is based in Hargeisa, the breakaway Republic of Somaliland, a peaceful country with democratically elected government. It is largely a secure and pleasant land far from the de-stabilized parts of the east and south of Somalia. It is welcoming to foreigners, with a thriving private sector. The Somaliland University of Technology (SUTECH),is looking for fellowships in various disciplines. Students and Professors from these disciplines are welcome to apply. Fellowships will allow the candidates to have the opportunity to work in a fertile land for research in every discipline:Area of fellowships include:

1) Architecture

5) Law and Courts

6) Human Rights

7) Human Resources Development

8) Food Security

9) Water and Water Management

10) Drought, Ecology and Conservation of Bio-diversity

Duties and Responsibilities The main duties that the fellows will be expected to carry out are:

  • Research;
  • Teaching (Part-time);
  • Contribution to capacity building.

Status

  • Fellows are considered gratis personnel. They are not staff members.
  • Fellows may assist or substitute for staff to when required.
  • Fellows may not represent SUTECH in any official capacity.

Competencies Fellows' Expenses Fellows are not financially remunerated by SUTECH. All costs connected with a fellow's participation in the Programme must be borne by:

a. the nominating institution, related institution or government, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students and researchers; b. the student, who will have to obtain financing for subsistence and make his/her own arrangements for travel (including to and from the office), visas, accommodation, etc.

Insurance

SUTECH accepts no responsibility for the medical and life insurance of the intern or costs arising from accidents and illness incurred during a fellowship. As fellows are not covered under any insurance, including MAIP, they should not travel to hazardous locations in the course of their fellowship with SUTECH. Applicants for fellowship must show proof of valid medical d life/accident insurance for the duty station for which they will work. It must include adequate coverage in the event of an injury or illness during the fellowship which:

a. requires transportation to the Home Country or Country of Residence for further treatment; or b. results in death and requires preparation and return of the remains to the Home Country, or Country of Residence.

Subsequent Employment

The purpose of the Fellowship Programme is not to lead to further employment with SUTECH but to complement a fellow's research work. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of a fellowship. Should an offer of employment be envisaged, the fellows can only apply for posts at the end of the fellowship period.

Required Skills and Experience SUTECH may accept fellows providing the following conditions are met:

a. Enrolment: Enrolled in a bachelors/masters programme in a graduate school (second university degree or higher) at the time of application and during the fellowship, or pursuing their university/college studies, having completed at least four years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree.

b. Skills Proficiency in English required. Fluency Somali is an asset; Computer literate in standard software applications; Demonstrated keen interest in the work of the world of academia, and of SUTECH in particular, and have a personal commitment to MDGs; Demonstrated the ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. Duration Fellowship assignments vary in length according to the availability and academic requirements of the intern, as well as the needs of SUTECH. However, they will normally last no less than six months and no more than twelve months. Fellowship assignments are available on a part-time and full-time basis throughout the year, depending on the availability of meaningful assignments and the needs and capacity of offices to receive and supervise fellows. Interested students must send the following documentation:

  • a copy of his/her most recent resume or curriculum vitae;
  • a letter from his/her university confirming current enrolment and graduation date;
  • copy of his/her insurance cover
  • a letter of endorsement from a senior faculty member who has directly supervised the student in the recent past and who is fully acquainted with the student's performance; and
  • a brief paper setting out the reasons why he/she is seeking a fellowship with SUTECH and what is expected from the experience.

SUTECH is not responsible for any claims by any parties where the loss of or damage to their property, death or personal injury was caused by the actions or omission of action by the fellows during their fellowship.
