Resource description

This project is seeking a donation of computer equipment, computer software, accessories, ICT training materials and other resources for exapnding an existing Community Computer & ICT Skills Training Centre in Kampala, Uganda, and for setting up a new community computer training facility in Tororo district, eastern Uganda. We are seeking computer equipment donation of desktop computers, laptop computers, Ipads, current software, accessories and ICT training materials and teacher resources and supplies for expanding our current Computer and ICT Project in Kampala that is benefiting orphans andvulnerable children and youth, and for setting up a new community ICT training centers in Tororo district of Uganda, that will benefit orphans, vulnerables children and disadvantaged youth and poor communities.

Background: Child Support Uganda (formerly Orphans for Christ in Africa) is a non-denominational not-for-profit organization (NGO), caring for orphans, vulnerable children, disadvantaged youth and their communities in Uganda. We stand as a voice for the disadvantaged children & youth in communities all over Uganda. CSU was registered in Uganda as an NGO and incorporated as a Company limited by guarantee without share capital in 2006, as (Orphans for Christ in Africa) but was later rebranded to Child Support Uganda, (CSU), in January 2012. CSU supports orphans and disadvantaged children and youth in formal education, vocationals skills Training programs, in the slums of Kampala city and in Tororo districts of Uganda.

Mission:

In response to the biblical mandate to care for orphans, widows, and other destitute persons in society (James 1:27), and, in obedience to the Great Commission of Christ (Matt. 28:18-20);

Child Support Uganda (CSU) exists with a mission to improve the lives and prospects of orphans, vulnerable children in Uganda, improving their physical and spiritual well-being, enhancing their educational opportunities, giving each one equal opportunity to realize their God-given full potential.

Project: In December 2006, CSU received an initial donation of used computer equipment from James Kilpatrick, a young university student from Australia, for setting up a community computer & ICT skills training centre in Kampala, to help provide ICT skills to disadvantaged children and youth. CSU proceeded to set up the first Computer ICT Skill Training Centre Kampala in 2007. Todate, this centre has provided ICT skills to over 500 young people in Uganda.

Currently, the Center provide ICT skills training covering:

  • Certificate in computer Applications
  • Certificate and diploma in computer Repair and Refurbishment
  • Corporate Staff training
  • Diploma in ICT courses

The Community ICT Skill training program runs for a three 4-monthly semesters cycles per year, with each semester taking in a minimum of 100 orphaned youth per training cycle in Kampala Centre.

Assessing the present needs and future increase in Uganda's orphan population (currently at 2million), and in light of the increasing number of people having access to computers and the internet in Uganda, there is need forCSU to expand its community ICT skill training program to cover other needy areas of Uganda where disadvantaged children and youth live to give them equal access to the ICT skills.

CSU is looking at meeting the needs of the increasing number of young people completing secondary education in the rural areas without having any access to computer skills or any post secondary education training for employment.

As, such, CSU is seeking a donation of computer equipment, software, accessories, training material and other resources to enable her expand the current Community ICT skill training center into more comprehensive training centre, introduce more ICT courses, and and set up one additional new community ICT centers in Tororo district of in eastern Uganda.

The equipment and software needed for the project are:

  • Desktop and Laptop computers & Ipads
  • PowerPoint projectors
  • Photocopier
  • Bizhub Printers & Lazerjet Printers
  • Adobe Graphics software
  • Video editing software
  • Accounting software:Tally, Quick books, Sage Accounting, Payroll,
  • ICT training resources

Aims:

The aims of community computer & ICT skill training program for Ugandan orphans are to encourage the children to:

  • Receive quality ICT skills training for future employment
  • Learn to support themselves in an honest manner
  • Live in environment of self-sufficiency and self-esteem
  • Train teachers who will have ongoing training at different community computer centers in Uganda.

Beneficiaries:

Most of the beneficiaries of this project are orphans and disadvantaged children and youth who have little or no financial resources and no access to computer skills. These young people are in great need of support. Most of these young people have lost one or both parents due to HIV/AIDS and have no sources of income to support them to learn a kill for self-reliance. The project aims at providing this training to these young people to enable them get employment and become self-reliant.
