The areas where volunteers are placed in Senegal may include orphanages, nursery schools and community centers. These facilities provide care and support for children aged 0-12 years, and in some cases up to 18 years. Some have been orphaned as a result of HIV/AIDS, many have families who cannot afford to support them, while others have been taken off the streets or were abandoned at birth. By supporting the overstretched staff in these centers, volunteers in Senegal provide much needed assistance. The volunteer's contribution can help bring a brighter future for these children. Volunteer opportunities in Senegal include teaching school-age children, counselling, helping to cook, feeding the children, cleaning, and devising and organizing fun activities and recreation. Volunteers in Senegal are instrumental is ensuring that the children in their care are well looked after, that they adhere to a routine and carry out their homework.

In Yoff volunteers will assist at a local Talibe center in the community. The Talibe boys are street children who spend their days begging for money. The center provides a safe space where they can be off the streets, have lunch, showers and receive medical care and also attend lessons. The center also accepts poor children from the local community. The schedule at the center depends on the local schools schedules. In a normal week school runs Mon - Fri in the mornings and Tues and Thursday in the afternoons. The Talibe boys will be at the center most of the day whereas the local children will come when school is not in. There is a schedule for the days at the center although this changes frequently and volunteers need to be flexible and able to think on their feet.

Volunteers can also assist at La Pouponniere. This is a project where babies whose mother pass away during birth are looked after until they are 1 year old. Volunteers spend time at the service with approx. 60 babies aged new born to 1 year. Volunteers work alongside Nuns and local nurse to feed, bathe, change and engage with babies. A lot of time is spent giving babies the 1:1 attention they need they need playing with toys, listening to music and assisting with age appropriate development.

Your contribution can help bring a brighter future for these children.

NOTE: As this program involves working closely with orphaned and at risk children a three week minimum commitment is required to participate.
