Volunteer Opportunity description

Local Engagement Developer

We're looking for two people, driven to be part of the solution to solve climate change, with experience of community action on climate related issues, to join our team of Local Engagement Developers. Alongside the two existing team members, you will be working to support UKYCC's 'Local Catalysts' and further develop the Local Catalysts Programme.

The Catalysts programme supports individuals to become leaders in climate change through local community action. It offers training, resources and ongoing support as they participate in the blossoming local level, youth climate movement in whatever way is most appropriate in their community. Our Catalysts include people in education (secondary school and university), people in and out of work, those already active in the sector and for those whom this is their first foray into activism. Our support is therefore very personal - we try to have one-to-one calls with each Catalyst once a fortnight as well as a team call every week.

Although the Local Engagement Developers facilitate the programme, we recognise that our Catalysts have as much to learn from us, as we do from them, which very much shapes how the programme operates. In effect, we have built a team of community climate activists from across the country that support one another with great efficacy. The programme is set to expand, to include:

  • More than 10 new Local Catalysts in the very near future
  • The planning and running of a training event for up to 150 new Local Catalysts towards the end of 2013

What's in it for you?

This is an opportunity to play a central role in tackling climate change in your community. You will have the opportunity to inspire and empower young people in and around your community to make change, responding to a global issue at a local level.

You will be supported as much as you feel you need. At the very least, we can offer training in facilitation, public speaking, theories of change and campaign strategy. As a UKYCC organiser, you will be working alongside experienced community activists, and the opportunity for mutual support will be invaluable.

Although it should not be seen as the primary purpose of this role, the opportunity to develop and demonstrate your skills in facilitation and communication will no doubt be an enviable addition to your CV.

What you will be expected to do:

  • Hold one-to-one Skype calls with at least four Catalysts each fortnight.
  • Join the weekly Local Catalysts Skype call and the weekly Development Team Skype call.
  • Participate in the development of training and support resources
  • Respond fairly promptly to requests for support from Catalysts
  • Help plan and deliver the expansion of the programme, including the recruitment of new Catalysts in the near future.
  • Help plan and run future training events, likely to include one hundred or more participants at the end of 2013.

Person Specification:
Required:

  • A keen desire to be part of the solution to climate change
  • Some experience of community action on climate change or other issues
  • Commitment to this role for at least six months/one year.
  • Friendliness!
  • Dependability - you will be supporting a team of people and so responsiveness to e-mails and requests for guidance is essential.

Desirable:

  • Based outside South East England - preferably in Scotland or Northern England
  • An understanding and respect for the ethos of UKYCC and/or similar organisations

To apply for this position, please send your CV along with a 200 word response to the question, "what do you see as the role of community action in tackling climate change?".
