Communities In Schools of Federal Way Mentor Program asks volunteers to spend just one hour, one day a week during the school year with a student at their school being a mentor to a student who has been identified as being on the "brink of success!" Mentoring isn't tutoring or counseling, it's really about building a lasting friendship and providing the support, guidance and encouragement a student needs to be successful, which is also proven to increase their chances of graduating!
Our mentees attend Federal Way Public Schools and can range anywhere from 5th – 12th grade and for the 2013-2014 school year, we anticipate having mentoring matches in at least 15 different schools in Federal Way. While mentoring does happen during the regular school day, we can work around most scheduling needs while also making sure a student doesn't miss any main core classes.
To apply, a Mentor Program Application must be completed. The application includes 3 references, a WA State Patrol Background Check and National Sex Offender Registry check. A short mentor interview as well as a 1.5 hour orientation are also required before meeting with a student.
For more information or to get an application, please contact Mentor Program Coordinator, Jennifer Youngblood at jennifery@cisfederalway.org or (253) 528-0847.
