Four of the world's eight sea turtle species nest on beaches in Chiapas. All eight species are endangered. Barra Zacapulco is one of the 144 beaches in Mexico where sea turtles come to lay eggs. It is also one of twenty-two beaches where these nests of eggs have a high risk of being poached. In an effort to aid the survival of eggs and hatchling turtles, the Barra Zacapulco Turtle Sanctuary collects eggs year round and reburies them on their grounds for safe-keeping. When the hatchlings emerge, they are gathered and released together under protection of sanctuary staff. The sanctuary is open to visitors and provides information about sea turtles and the protection and preservation work that is performed. The project is supported by the Institute of Environment and Natural History of the state of Chiapas and seeks to actively involve the local community, students, scientists, and volunteers. The goal of this project is to further support the protection of sea turtles through the collaborative efforts of international volunteers and take part a global movement to understand and preserve the health and biodiversity of our oceans.

Cuatro de las ocho especies de tortugas marinas en el mundo anidan en las playas de Chiapas. Las ocho especies están en peligro de extinción. Barra de Zacapulco es una de las 144 playas en México donde las tortugas marinas vienen a anidar sus huevos. Es también una de las veintidós playas donde los nidos de huevos tienen un alto riesgo de ser saqueados. En un esfuerzo por ayudar a la sobrevivencia de los huevos y la cría de tortugas, el santuario de Tortugas "Barra Zacapulco" colecta los huevos durante todo el año y los entierra en su propiedad para protegerlos. Cuando las tortugas recién nacidas salen, ellos las reúnen y las liberan bajo la protección del personal del santuario. El santuario está abierto a visitantes y provee información sobre las tortugas marinas y el trabajo realizado para la protección y preservación. El proyecto es apoyado por el Instituto de Medio Ambiente e Historia Natural del Estado de Chiapas, y busca involucrar activamente a la comunidad local, estudiantes, científicos y voluntarios. El objetivo de este proyecto es apoyar aún más la protección de las tortugas marinas a través de los esfuerzos de colaboración de los voluntarios internacionales, y tomar parte de un movimiento global para entender y preservar la salud y la biodiversidad de los océanos.
