Under supervision of the Program Manager the Data Visualization Specialist will be responsible for the following:
Receive training in style guides and data visualization production using Tableau Public.
Generate charts, graphs, and tables that visually represent updated annual data on sustainability indicators for use on our website and in print.
Innovate current format of data visualizations to enhance quality and clarity.
Background on Sustainable San Mateo County and the Indicators Report:
Established in 1992, Sustainable San Mateo County's mission is to encourage community action on issues relating to sustainability by providing accurate, timely, and empowering information. Our core program, the Indicators for a Sustainable San Mateo County report provides information on local trends impacting our economy, environment, and society. Each year, we feature a Key Indicator for an in-depth look at a current issue, critical to the long-term sustainability of the community. Our 2015 Key Indicator is Food Systems and our research will cover a broad range of topics from sustainable agriculture to hunger.
Orientation, Supervision and Evaluation:
SSMC is a small organization, with a full-time Executive Director, a contract Indicators Program Manager, and many engaged volunteers. Orientation, supervision, and evaluation will be lead by the Program Manager. Tasks will be assigned based on volunteer interests and goals and SSMC projects and priorities. Course credit may be available to students and should be arranged on a case-by-case basis.
Knowledge and Skills Developed:
Understand root causes and inter-relational nature of social problems; learn how citizen groups have and can effect change in their communities; develop research, communication, advocacy, and/or problem-solving skills; determine how to apply one's professional skills to the betterment of society; engage, motivate and inspire others.
