Join the Preble Street Maine Hunger Initiative (MHI), working at hosts sites in Standish and Damariscotta, to advocate for solutions to poverty that causes hunger and help low-income households move towards greater economic self-sufficiency. AmeriCorps VISTAs fight hunger in Maine through increased access to USDA federal nutrition programs in underserved communities by providing Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) outreach and application assistance and assisting in the implementation and expansion of the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP).

Summer Associates will need knowledge of hunger and poverty issues, government benefit programs, and the emergency food system. VISTA members must be highly organized, detail oriented, have strong computer skills, be flexible team players who can also work independently, and have excellent communication skills. They should also have experience with or knowledge of volunteerism and fundraising. VISTA members will need access to a car.

This is a full-time position that may require occasional evening and weekend hours for 8 weeks (June 11-August 5).

Member benefits include a $973 (before taxes) monthly living allowance and a $1,175 education award or $125 cash stipend upon successful completion of service.
