Volunteer Opportunity description

The Museum of Reclaimed Urban Space (MoRUS), a New York City living history museum dedicated to preserving and exhibiting the history of the East Village's community gardens, homesteads, squats and other sites of grassroots activism and social change, is offering a volunteer opportunity for those interested in urban planning as it relates to neighborhood scale sustainable practices for affordable mixed-use development. Applicants should have experience with general urban planning issues including urban design, green building, and affordable housing development. The opportunity would provide an interested student with a working and learning experience within the dynamic, vibrant and growing urban environment that is downtown Manhattan.

Special Qualifications

The successful candidate must show evidence of a professional interest in downtown urban planning, landscape architecture, architecture and urban design through either documented course work or through working knowledge and experience. The successful candidate must also demonstrate an understanding of Microsoft Office. The volunteer may perform the following tasks:

  • Perform research, documentation and assistance on various planning projects
  • Provide off-site documentation of various projects
  • Update historic maps

The volunteer would be expected to work 10-20 hours per week within a flexible schedule suited to the selected candidate's needs (and may work up to 40 hours per week if preferred). The position is unpaid. The assignment would last for an initial period of three months and can be extended.

Please send a resume, cover letter and a sampling of your portfolio to volunteers@morusnyc.org. Reference Urban Planning Internship in the title of the email.
