Construction Crew Leader – Dane County Wisconsin

(Madison metropolitan area)

Position Summary

AmeriCorps position – an 11 month commitment starting in August

Tuesday – Saturday 7:30am – 4:00 pm. Reports to Construction Manager.

Location – Madison, Wisconsin

The staff, volunteers, and donors of Habitat for Humanity have a shared goal, to see the Dane County affiliate be a recognized leader, partner, and catalyst for affordable housing solutions that positively impact families, communities, and the environment. We are guided by three fundamental values:

Through volunteer labor and donations of money and materials, Habitat builds and rehabilitates simple, decent houses with the help of our partner families. Habitat homes are sold to partner families at no profit, financed with affordable, no-interest loans. The homeowner' monthly mortgage payments are used to build more Habitat houses.

Construction Crew Leaders will each train and lead over 20 volunteers per week at their assigned construction site in and around the Madison metropolitan area. These efforts will assist Habitat Dane County in reaching our target of serving two dozen families through new homes, rehabs, and home repairs. Construction Crew Leaders will be responsible for all aspects of construction related tasks, including framing, roofing, siding, interior and exterior finishes, and landscaping.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • assist in the set up and break down of construction sites, including preparation for volunteers, on a daily basis
  • complete construction tasks as assigned
  • lead and train up to 30 volunteers per week on site in various construction related tasks
  • instruct up to 30 volunteers per week on Habitat Dane's mission and our methods used to combat the area's need for affordable housing
  • enforce safety by modeling safe behavior, monitoring volunteers' safety, leading safety talks every morning and taking corrective action when necessary

Qualifications:

  • HS degree or GED required
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record required, and access to a personal vehicle

Skills:

  • Excellent communication skills
  • Comfort speaking publicly to up to 100 people
  • Ability to work well as part of a team
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs on a regular basis
  • Ability to be on their feet all day
  • Comfortable working at heights
  • Comfortable working outdoors in varying types of weather
  • Basic construction knowledge a plus
  • Customer service experience a plus

Compensation

This is an AmeriCorps National Direct position. To learn more about AmeriCorps, please visit www.americorps.gov. Habitat Dane AmeriCorps National Direct members commit to 11 months of full-time service and receive the following benefits:

  • Living allowance of $12,530 paid over the full 46.5 weeks of service
  • Segal AmeriCorps Education Award at completion of service ($5,730)
  • Student loan forbearance or deferment while in service
  • Healthcare benefits while in service
  • Childcare assistance (if applicable) while in service
  • Worker's compensation
  • Food stamp assistance
  • In addition Habitat Dane provides a $200 monthly rental stipend to supplement living costs
