Volunteer Opportunity description

Certified Application Counselors (CACs) were established by the Department of Health and Human Services to help consumers navigate the insurance Marketplaces newly created as a part of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). CAC Volunteers help PPSP patients understand, apply, and enroll for health coverage through the state-based Marketplace program.

Specific Duties:

  • Work in our health centers to inform patients about the ACA and the full range of Qualified Health Plan (QHP) options and insurance affordability programs for which they are eligible;
  • Assist patients in applying for coverage in a QHP through the Marketplace and in applying for insurance affordability programs;
  • Facilitate enrollment of eligible individuals in QHPs and insurance affordability programs; and,
  • Help the Patient Services Department with routine clerical needs – such as data entry, filing, and packet making – as needed.

General Duties:

  • Maintain a positive, supportive customer service attitude at all times.
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times.
  • Arrive on time for regularly scheduled shifts or notify the Community Resource Manager before the scheduled shift with enough notice to schedule a replacement.

Training Provided: All CAC Volunteers must take a 5-hour, online training developed by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and facilitated by PPSP to become certified.
