Volunteer Opportunity description

The Mighty Pen is dedicated to addressing the lack of opportunity for children in the developing world that don't have access to even the most basic forms of public education. We are driven to make a difference for scores of children that aren't given the tools they need to build a better life for themselves. Our solution has been to provide educational materials, through close partnership with local communities and teachers, to allow for the growth of literacy among children in their native language.

The organization was born in 2003 and began its mission with a community in Nepal. In 2011 we expanded to the Tibetan community of Boudhanath. By the end of this period our project expanded to include 30 regions and 15,000 participants. During this process The Mighty Pen distributed 2,000 children's books across the country, providing valuable resources to both schools and libraries, expanding the reach of literary tools to continue the educational process for thousands of Nepalese and Tibetan children.

We are now in the process of expanding our award winning project in Canada, with a focus on our country's Aboriginal population. In order to do so, we are looking for a talented individual, with previous experience in Aboriginal or education initiatives. Computer literate, a Bachelor's Degree or equivalent college and work experience in one of these fields is required.

Reporting to the Program Coordinator, you will undertake the following duties twice a week, during regular office hours (9am-5pm). They include: researching Aboriginal groups and community by in strategies; co-developing quantitative measurements of success and plans for project expansion; in addition to other duties as requested. You must also be willing to travel to these communities with the Project Coordinator once a month and must pass a police background check to do so. This position would start immediately and continue until the end of June, with a commitment to work two days a week.

Duties and Expectations:

  • Research and report creation: Aboriginal groups, community by in strategies and fundraising initiatives.
  • Co-development of quantitative measurements of success, including Results Based Management and Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning indicators.
  • Co-development of project expansion, conducted at the end of the pilot project.
  • Development of media and press packages.
  • Liaison work with Aboriginal communities and leadership, including monthly travel.
  • Work closely with team members and Project Coordinator.
  • Additional duties as required and requested.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree or College and work equivalent.
  • Driver's License.
  • Willingness to complete a police background check and a clean criminal record.
  • Experience with an Aboriginal or educational initiative.
  • Project management/coordination experience is highly desirable.
  • Mastery of Microsoft Office.

  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work flexible hours if need be.
  • Ability to multi-task and work without supervision.
  • Dynamic and outgoing.
  • Willingness to work twice a week until the end of June.

This is a volunteer position with no compensation, but will allow for the strong development of a project management skill set.
