MORE is a refugee services and learning center located in the North End of St. Paul. We have three programs: Education, Mental Health, and Social Services. Within these programs, we offer several services including English Language Classes, Job Club for ESL, private therapy, support groups, case management, and basic needs assistance. We serve individuals and families from a number of different countries including Burma, Bhutan, El Salvador, Mexico, Palestine, Vietnam, Syria, and Honduras.
ABOUT THE SUMMER EDUCATION PROGRAM:
Our summer program includes 3 levels of English language classes ranging from pre-literate to advanced. Our Job Club also is offered for lower level and higher level learners. During the afternoons in the summer, our beginning, intermediate, and advanced learners all join in one class to participate in a one-room schoolhouse style class.
The Education Program is looking for volunteers to fill a number of positions in the summer:
-Classroom assistant for pre-literate, low beginning, intermediate/advanced classes -1:1 and small group tutor for large multi level class -Job Club class assistant
Our volunteer opportunities are flexible. Volunteer opportunities are available beginning at 1 hour per week and on. Our hours when volunteer opportunities are available are:
REQUIREMENTS AND TRAINING
No previous work with refugees or in a classroom is required. No foreign language skills are required. We simply ask all of our volunteers to be open, willing to learn and share their knowledge, and treat everyone at MORE with respect.
The Minnesota Literacy Council provides a training that all volunteers must complete before beginning their role at MORE (unless a volunteer is already credentialed in TESOL/TEFL). Interested parties are also welcome to shadow a class beforehand to learn more about the program and to see if this is a good fit.
