Espaanglisch offers free and inexpensive English language classes to low income Peruvians. This program is aimed at giving those previously unable to afford language classes a chance to learn a new language. In doing so Espaanglisch allows for the fostering of new skills and opportunities in both its students and the community as a whole.
Espaanglisch is located in Trujillo, Peru's 3rd largest city, and provides English Language Classes to children, youth, and adults, on and off-site.
Espaanglisch currently has three programs; Basic English for Children, Basic English for Adults/Youth, and Gringlish Conversation Classes.
In the Basic English for Children Program, Espaanglisch partners with a local NGO, USDA (Una Sonrisa de Amor), and a local school, Institucion Educativa Simon Bolivar, to provide free English classes to children from the impoverished areas of El Porvenir and El Milagro in Trujillo. Volunteers travel to the USDA site two mornings per week and to the Simon Bolivar site three mornings per week to facilitate English classes to each grade level, and can get involved in other USDA activities if interested.
Within the Basic English for Adults/Youth Program, Espaanglisch provides free English classes to a small group of 16-19 year old participants of Fairmail, another local NGO partner, and to other interested members of the community. The Fairmail youth come from extremely impoverished backgrounds such as El Milagro, Trujillo´s landfill site. Through Fairmail they are taught photography which they in turn sell for a profit through postcards and cards. Classes take place at Espaanglisch three nights a week for an hour.
Gringlish Conversation Classes are meant for adults with at least an intermediate level of English and who want to practice their skills. A typical Gringlish student is working in a low income job and is trying to improve their English in order to secure employment in the tourism industry, or is a volunteer with one of our partner NGOs. Volunteers attend for free while non-volunteers pay a low fee. There is no set lesson plan, however classes typically involve a set topic, games and/or activities. Classes are held at Espaanglisch 3 nights a week for 60 minutes each.
The number of hours a volunteer works depends on the program(s) within which they are teaching. Our application form allows for volunteers to state what program(s) they are interested in and how many hours they hope to volunteer.
Espaanglisch has an On-Site Coordinator who assists with orientating and supporting volunteers during their stay, including providing teaching support as needed.
Volunteers can stay on-site at the school, also a family home (Señora Carmen's Casa) where they can practice their Spanish skills with Carmen, as well as hang out with Espaanglisch staff and other volunteers.
Besides volunteering, volunteers can take advantage of nearby Huanchaco, a popular tourist destination famous for its surfing, take Spanish lessons at our Spanish School, Peruvian cooking classes and salsa lessons.
