Volunteer Opportunity description

Under the direct supervision of chapter director, the GLSEN Advocacy Representative will be mainly responsible for analyzing and understanding LGBT relevant state public policy issues, lead legislative and regulatory policy discussion and development in support of GLSEN and LGBT students' interests. This person is expected to create a team of GLSEN Pgh advocates, partner with advocacy representatives from PSEC, and also serve as a contact person between the two organizations.

Main responsibilities include:

  • Build a cohort of individuals who will represent GLSEN Pgh in all advocacy efforts.
  • In collaboration with PSEC representatives, communicate persuasively with government officials and staff, potential external allies and opponents at the state and local levels
  • Working on political advocacy at the Federal, State and local levels
  • As a pro-active member of GLSEN Pittsburgh, represent organization's mission and interests, set influence on the public and state regulators
  • Build relationships between GLSEN and other advocate organizations
