Volunteer Opportunity description

EHN require energetic volunteers to help run an Orphanage in Kathmandu comprising of 17 children aged between 4 and 14yrs old.

You'll stay in the orphanage with the children and help get them ready for school early morning before taking them in. After this you will help around the orphanage or visit some of Kathmandu's sights before collecting the children from school mid-afternoon. Other activities include playing games, helping with homework plus getting them dressed and washed.

The placement requires a minimum of one week up to 3 months commitment with no qualifications or previous experience needed. The children love to play and practice English with a few of the older boys showing real passion for football, Chelsea, Spain & Barcelona being the flavour of the day. Saturday is the day they have off school so this is the one day a week you will be worked the hardest.

A little about Nepal

Nepal has just reached the 30 million mark in terms of population with around 75 to 80% of those people living in rural areas. The main religion is Hinduism with Buddhism taking up the second largest percentage. The people of Nepal are some the warmest you will find so it's very common to be invited to dinner or just to sip some sweet tea while listening to music and chat. Recent years have seen allot of unrest with the rise of the Maoists party, Now things have settled down but the people still don't have allot of the basics that we in the western world take for granted. Schools are under supplied, hospitals lacking equipment and staff and farmers just growing enough to survive. These are the reasons why EHN is trying to put money directly into the area's and people who need it most.

How EHN work

If you are interested in this placement, EHN charge £10 or $15 per day plus an £80 admin fee. A high percentage of the money goes directly to the orphanage to pay for food, rent and education equipment. Re remaining goes to EHN cover the cost of running the small office in Kathmandu plus support some projects where volunteers are not needed such as paying for school fees, medicines and water filters.
