Volunteer Opportunity description

SPRING 2013: Become a Performing Arts Mentor with The Unusual Suspects!

Seeking Volunteer Mentors for the Unusual Suspects Theatre Company's writing and performance workshops with middle and high school students in Los Angeles County.

An Unusual Suspects Theatre Company mentor is the following:

  • A supporter that expresses belief in youth's small and large accomplishments and conveys warmth and care for their ideas and concerns to help build their self-esteem.
  • A leader that sets high expectations and encourages excellence in leadership development.
  • A physically active performing arts workshop participant who plays theatre games and exercises led by US teaching artists, designed to strengthen youth's listen-ing, critical thinking, cooperative learning and social skills.
  • A model of good behavior and a positive attitude who brings awareness to youth's own behavior and atti-tudes.
  • An ambassador of cultural awareness and sensitivity that encourages youth's interaction and experiences with other cultures.
  • A Provider of information to help youth acquire addi-tional knowledge in areas that interest them.

Born out of the ashes of the 1992 L.A. Riots, The Unusual Suspects Theatre Company has grown into a model mentoring organization using theatre arts to reach youth in underserved and at-risk environments. The Unusual Suspects offers playwriting and performance work-shops through which youth develop self-esteem, tolerance, and the communica-tion and coping skills needed to make positive life choices.
