This program is open to all volunteers who are fluent in the English language. Volunteers can be placed in primary schools, high schools or in adult classes, and the program is designed to allow volunteers to work closely with children and groups in small communities. Volunteers help to teach English but it is necessary to have at least an intermediate understanding of Spanish to work in the schools.
Volunteers will work as an English Teacher's assistant and will work Monday thru Friday, at least four hours a day, depending on the needs of the school. Classes have high numbers of students and generally lack adequate resources so volunteers are needed to help with planning creative lessons and running games and activities, especially with the younger children.
Volunteers spend their time assisting the English teacher with daily activities, and will spend time teaching and playing with the children. The following are some of the volunteer's responsibilities:
Help the teacher with the planned classroom activities
Teach basic English to the children
Play games, and read to the children in English
Teach them good hygiene and life skills
Help the children complete projects
Volunteers on this program will stay with a host family. You will be provided a simple room with all the basic utilities. There will be electricity, shower, and generally speaking everything you would find in your own home. The host family will provide you with three meals a day. The meals are typical Costa Rican dishes, and usually consist of rice and beans which are served with some type of meat. The fruit in Costa Rica is fresh and inexpensive, so if you are vegetarian or have any special dietary restrictions, there will be plenty of options. Saturdays and Sundays are free time for you to explore this beautiful country!
