  • Basel, Kanton Basel-Stadt, Switzerland

Send an email outlining your interests and experience to jamie.donahoe@checkorphan.org.

CheckOrphan is the leading news and information source for all rare diseases and orphan products. It provides the latest information for patients, healthcare professionals, researchers, industry and government. CheckOrphan is a nonprofit organization, ensuring all information is freely accessible to benefit everyone.

We are looking for one or two people to join our news team and help keep our news and information platform current.

Mission

Our mission is to support the rare disease community by informing the world about rare diseases and orphan products and provide unique solutions that help to ensure there are more treatments for rare diseases.

Background

Orphan product status is given to drugs or products developed for rare diseases. The area of rare diseases is the fastest growing field in the pharmaceutical / biotech industry with many career opportunities.

There are over 7,000 rare diseases and they afflict over 60 million people in Europe and the USA alone. Only about 5% of the 7,000 diseases currently have a treatment. About 70% of people with rare diseases are children, and the majority of them will die before they are 15 years old. Rare diseases drive many families into poverty and collectively create a large socioeconomic burden.

Position(s) – Media Monitoring Manager

One of CheckOrphan's most valued assets is the daily news and we need you to:

  • Find and load news articles to the CheckOrphan website
  • Evaluate what is newsworthy from articles that are sent to us
  • Assess whether the news is about a rare disease, which is CheckOrphan's focus.
  • Research and contact entities (companies, foundations, organizations, etc.) to ensure they send us their news and events
  • Prepare the CheckOrphan newsletter that is sent each day once all the news has been added
  • Coordinate with the social media team

Committment

This position is a volunteer position, with a Monday-Friday daily commitment of up to 3 hours with the goal of having the newsletter sent by 1 PM GMT. You can work from home, or if you are in the vicinity of Basel, Switzerland, you can join us in our offices. You do not have to do this full-time. It does require about 3 hours per day (Mon – Fri) on average and we need to be able to depend on your reliability and strong communication skills.

Your Experience

You might have finished or are finishing a degree in the biosciences and are looking for experience to find a job within the pharmaceutical industry, or you might be looking to move into a career in PR or communications. Or you may just be really interested in gaining experience with rare diseases and orphan products, or helping out a great cause.

Your work with CheckOrphan will give you excellent insight and exposure to all the pharmaceutical and biotech companies in the rare disease sector, as well as numerous non-profit patient organizations and foundations, public policy developments and upcoming research.
