Girls Only! is an after-school program for high school girls. It is a safe and fun place for them to do homework and socialize with their friends.
These volunteers act as tutors and mentors in a fast-paced, high energy unstructured environment. They must be comfortable setting boundaries, enforcing rules, and socializing teen girls.
They may work one-on-one with students doing homework or in groups of 2-5, as needed. Assistants and students have access to academic supplies, including calculators, geometry tools, computers, dictionaries, etc. Typical assignments include, but are not limited to: English papers, fractions, biology projects, multiplication, geometry, driver's ed., etc. Most of the youth we serve are refugees and New Americans. These volunteers are patient, creative problem-solvers who are able to adapt to various learning styles and English proficiency. They may have a subject specialty, but this is not required.
Volunteers may find themselves having controversial conversations with the girls on occasion. Volunteers should respect all opinions and be comfortable facilitating conflict resolution as needed. They must be excellent role models for the girls.
