The new University of Maryland Support, Advocacy, Freedom, and Empowerment (SAFE) Center for Human Trafficking Survivors is seeking graduate students and professionals to participate in a summer volunteer fellowship providing support and assistance in the areas of direct services, research and program development.

Graduate students in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, Public Health, Education, Sociology, and other human development fields are eligible to apply. The SAFE Center is located in College Park, Maryland. The Fellowship is a 12 week program beginning on or around May 23rd and ending on or around August 19th. Full time and part time positions are available. We require a commitment of at least two days per week. Candidates may be required to complete a background check. This position is unpaid.

The SAFE Center focuses on direct service provision, research, and advocacy in the field of human trafficking. Through in-house service provision and collaboration with partners, the Center will provide comprehensive social, legal, and economic empowerment services to trafficking survivors. Initially focusing on Prince George's and Montgomery Counties, the Center will serve U.S. and foreign-born adult and child survivors of sex and labor trafficking.

Volunteer Fellows will be provided with training on topics such as: gaining an overall understanding of human trafficking, identification of human trafficking victims, promising practices for providing trauma-informed case management services to adults and minors, and other issues.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting with all aspects of case management including: intake, assessment, service plan creation, accompaniment to meetings and appointments, and advocating on behalf of clients.
  • Assisting with the research, creation, and facilitation of support groups, wellness programs, and empowerment classes.
  • Agency outreach and resource development.
  • Helping to develop a leadership program for survivors.
  • Assisting in creating outreach materials, training curricula and or/training materials.
  • Staffing the SAFE Center drop-in center and providing front office/administrative support.

Qualifications:

  • Must be a graduate student in Social Work, Psychology, Public Health, Education, Sociology, or another relevant human development field, or a professional with a degree in one of these fields.
  • Experience working with trafficking survivors, domestic violence survivors, or survivors of other criminal activity or trauma is preferred.
  • Spanish-language ability preferred.
  • Be able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Have an interest in human trafficking issues.
  • Demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Be well organized, detail-oriented, and flexible.
  • Ability to work well with culturally diverse population.
  • Have a strong work ethic and a positive attitude.
