Children for Change Cambodia (CCC), is a local, non-governmental organisation (NGO), operating in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. CCC support children aged 6 to 18 who live in the Sen Sok area of the city, a location renowned for its acute depravation. The majority of the beneficiaries live alongside a railway track or in stilted wooden shacks built over a dried up body of water, which has now become a refuse dump.
CCC offer a support network in the heart of the Sen Sok community. The children attend the centre every day for an 'academic bridge' programme, designed to nurture their educational development. Upon arrival at the centre they are provided with a meal - often the only food they will eat that day - before attending study group, led by a Cambodian member of staff. They also participate in English, Arts & Crafts and Music classes conducted by volunteers and that's where you come in.
CCC require English teachers to teach language classes to students ranging from 6 to 18 years old. Class sizes are manageable, with an average of 10 students in a class. Experience and a TEFL qualification are preferred, but not essential. The classes are an opportunity for both the teacher and the students to explore and have fun with the English language!
There is a syllabus of course books and activities available, though volunteers are free to use this as much or as little as they choose. The students are currently divided into 6 different levels of English class. The classes are ideally shared between two or three volunteers, though the workload is flexible and can be tailored to each volunteer's preferences. We are also developing an IT curriculum so volunteers with a knowledge of IT or any employable skills are welcome.
There is also opportunity at CCC to assist in numerous operational roles and assit with the development of CCC's microcredit program. Although CCC has been functioning under the Canadian not for profit AEE since 2006, it is now a new organisation with room for development. In December 2012 we changed our name to CCC and the organisation is now locally owned with a team of international volunteers working on the fundraising efforts. We are currently conducting research on both education and vocational skills based training. We also require volunteers to work on our communication efforts, updating our facebook account, working on fundraising materials and raising the profile of CCC both nationally and internationally.
We require volunteers to work in our centre in Phnom Penh from September 2013.
All volunteers must provide a Criminal Record Check from their country of origin.
