Volunteer Opportunity description

Adult Basic Education (ABE)is the foundation for developing skills in reading, writing, math, science, and social studies. These skills are applied toward demonstrating achievement required to earn a GED certificate.

Volunteers are able to work one-on-one, or in small groups, with adult students in a classroom setting to tutor reading and writing or math skills. Volunteers are free to choose the academic area where he or she feels most comfortable tutoring. Tutors may also assist students in practicing for the GED exam.

REQUIREMENTS

  1. You need patience, a minimum 12th grade level of education/proficiency, a desire to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds, and the ability to empower and to encourage students.
  2. You should have strong written communication skills, including the ability to create well-organized tutorials and clearly written instructions.
  3. You must be available for at least one semester/cycle (3 to 6 months) and commit to at least two (2) hours per tutor session.
  4. You should be able to commit to tutoring between the following times:
    1. 9:30 am – 2:00 pm, Monday through Friday
    2. 5:30 – 8:30 pm, Tuesday through Thursday
