Volunteer Opportunity description

Three-year-old Maria's mom brings her to school every day. She walks a mile through the park to get her to the Patterson Head Start program. Last Maria's mom brought her to school in an old winter coat. Maria's baby sister was with her, in only a sweater. It was 30 degrees outside and very windy.

When they got to Maria's classroom this morning, Maria's mom carefully unzipped the coat and transferred it to her baby sister for the cold walk home. Because the family can only afford one coat, the two little girls share the same coat every day.

Maria's day will be different from the other students' because she doesn't have a coat. Every day the 3 and 4 year old classes bundle up and go outside for nature walks. Every day they play soccer and kickball outside and take turns on the swings. Every day Maria, and the other children at Head Start whose parents can't afford winter coats, sit inside, playing games because from December-March it is just too cold to send them outside coatless.
