Are you a actor/actress, a theatre student, or an activist who uses theater to give voice to the community?
If yes, then this is the volunteer opportunity of a lifetime for you!
Every year IIPSOCULTA welcomes volunteers from all countries to become part of the Indigenous and Immigrant Family Support Center (CAFAMI) team. Starting in 2013, CAFAMI is looking for a volunteer who specializes in community theater and social change to be the Community Theater Program Coordinator.
As a volunteer, you will live and work for 6 months to 1 year in San Fransisco, Tetlanohcan, a beautiful highland rural village in Tlaxcala, Mexico.
CAFAMI's mission is to address the causes of unfair and unequal migration to the United States through popular education, organizing, and interaction between people and groups. The goal of the Community Theater Program is to use theater to tell the stories of the women of San Fransisco Tetlanohcan. The Program has produced 4 original plays in the last 4 years about migration and women's rights. The plays have been performed throughout the state of Tlaxcala, in several different Mexican states, and in New York, Connecticut, and Massachusits.
The Community Theater Program Coordinator will work directly with 25-35 women in San Fransisco Tetlanohcan who form part of CAFAMI's membership. Some of the responsabilities of the coordinator are to assist in performances with the group, improve organization and communication, do outreach, as well as other tasks that will be discussed further upon interview.
Important skills needed include knowledge or experience in arts, Theater of the Oppressed, interactive performance techniques, non-verbal imagery, consensus-building and problem-solving processes.
As a volunteer, you will receive a home stay with a family in the community, which includes food and lodging, and sometimes other utilities. We ask for a voluntary donation to the local families of $100 a week.
For more information or to apply for the volunteer position, please send a resume and a brief letter of intention to stephanie.iipsoculta@gmail.com.
