Volunteer Opportunity description

Help teens, ages 16-18, to take the first step toward a better future.

The Durham Literacy Center's Teen Career Academy seeks tutors in all subject areas (e.g. math, reading, science, etc.) to work with students as they prepare for the GED exam. We ask that you commit to one shift of two and a half hours per week, but volunteers are welcome to contribute as many hours as they wish. Currently, only morning shifts are available, but this is subject to change. The days and times that volunteers participate are flexible.

There is also a special opportunity--separate from, or included in, the above--to teach a special class on a life skill topic of the presenter's choice (e.g. nutrition, money management, art, yoga, transitioning from GED to job or college, etc.). Such classes take place on the third Thursday of each month. A particular topic would be presented once per semester, but is welcomed to be repeated in the next term.
