Since 2010, VSO has supported the stabilisation and development of South Sudan. As part of our education programme, we are providing capacity building support at different levels including systems development and skills enhancement with the aim of improving the quality of basic education. Current teaching conditions in South Sudan remain poor; teachers deliver an average of two hours teaching a day and there is a risk of salaries diminishing. To address these challenges, a teachers' professional union was established to improve conditions for teachers and encourage new teachers into the profession. VSO is now looking for an experienced education-based research and advocacy adviser to help enhance the capacity of Central Equatorial State Teachers' Professional Union and develop their capabilities.
This role is based at the Torit County Education Office, Eastern Equatoria. Motorcycle riding will be essential for transportation whilst on placement; necessary training will be provided. The working language is English, but most officials use Juba Arabic in unofficial conversations, so some language training is advisable; VSO will provide necessary language training and support. We'll ask you to commit up to 24 months to make a sustainable contribution to our development goals. In return, we'll provide you with extensive training before your placement, and our financial package includes a local living allowance, return flights and accommodation. When you return to your home country, we'll support you to resettle.
