Program and Outreach Coordinator (AmeriCorps*VISTA) – SOS Outreach

SOS Outreach was founded in 1993 as the Snowboard Outreach Society in order to introduce underprivileged youth to the mountains through snowboarding. As the organization has grown and evolved, it has expanded to include a youth development and adult mentorship curriculum, expanded to more participants, and incorporated more individual action sports to its programs. SOS uses action sports, including skiing, snowboarding, and skateboarding to engage underserved youth in programs that promote core values, self-sufficiency, goal setting, community involvement, and academic and personal achievement. SOS has been serving the youth of Washington since 1998.

Responsibilities

This position is a temporary, one-year commitment through the Sound Youth VISTA program (see below for more information).

Facilitate the expansion of SOS's multi-year University program to additional program partners and participants throughout the Puget Sound Region.

  • Expand the University Program from seasonal to year-round through the creation of summer service learning and leadership development sessions.
  • Expand the resources for programs through securing donations and sponsorships from manufacturers, foundations, individual donors, and community partners.
  • Create replicable systems to support long-term sustainability of SOS's regional program expansion. Systems will include individual, corporate, and foundation donor attraction and retention; curriculum research and development to support program growth; volunteer and youth agency recruitment; participant and contact online registration; and inventory management.

Qualifications

Experience, comfort, and passion in working with disadvantaged youth

  • Awareness of factors impacting the lives of underserved youth
  • Experience with service learning for youth
  • Organized, systematic worker
  • Experience in fundraising
  • Interest in and experience with outdoor based sports and activities such as camping, rock climbing, rafting, skiing, snowboarding and backpacking
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Ability to lead and motivate others
  • Proficiency with computer programs including Microsoft Office Suite

About Sound Youth VISTA

AmeriCorps*VISTA is the national service program designed specifically to fight poverty. AmeriCorps*VISTA members are stipended volunteers that serve for one year, full time at nonprofit or governmental organizations building capacity. Sound Youth VISTA recruits and places VISTA members in nonprofit organizations working with underserved youth in the Seattle area. During their service, Sound Youth trains members in social justice issues relevant to their work and personal development, and offers the support of a team of VISTAs and a VISTA Leader. Sound Youth sites offer the professional development trainings necessary for successful completion of VISTA projects. Upon successful completion of one year of service, volunteers are eligible to renew their commitment for another year.

AmeriCorps*VISTA Benefits

  • A living stipend of $12,696/year (pre-tax)
  • A three day Pre-Service Orientation (PSO)

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident of the U.S.
  • A Bachelor's Degree is preferred, however some college combined with work experience may substitute for a degree
  • Significant experience with community service and/or non-profit organization work
  • Must be available to serve full-time for one year
