Volunteers on this popular project can choose to assist in educational institutions such as primary and high schools located throughout Cape Town. Many volunteers enjoy working with local children and assisting in areas where there is often lack of resources such as school supplies, books and sporting equipment.

The main duties of a Volunteer Teacher in South Africa will be to assist the local teachers with lessons. However, your presence and involvement in every aspect of their schooling will be an invaluable contribution to the children involved in this project. From English conversation and writing skills, to sports activities and games, your participation and simply your presence will have a huge and beneficial impact on these children. You will also have the opportunity to impact the children in your own way by bringing your own set of skills/knowledge/interests to teach them. There is also a need for volunteers to teach computer skills as a number of computers have been donated but go unused much of the time.

Volunteers on this program will help in the following tasks:

  • Working with children in primary school
  • Teaching English and focusing on the children's self-esteem
  • Helping children with their homework
  • Giving reading and counting classes
  • Organising the recreation time and snacks

A willingness to help in other areas of the project would also add value e.g. upgrades to the facility, finding creative ways to make learning aids/material. During school holidays, volunteers have to inform us whether they would like a holiday program during their placement. All projects prefer volunteers to arrange their own private travel plans during the school holidays, as travel and sightseeing during placement disrupts the program.

Volunteers on this program can choose to be accommodated either at the volunteers house, located in central Cape Town, or with a local host family. At the Volunteer House, breakfast and dinner are provided Monday to Friday only. Volunteers are responsible for their own lunches and meals over weekends as well as their own laundry. Homestay's are situated nearby the project site and include 3 meals a day. Volunteers are responsible for their own laundry.

While it is not a pre-requisite to joining this program, we highly recommend all Teaching and Education volunteers complete the 120 hour TEFL course prior to volunteering.
