Volunteer Opportunity description

Spring Reins of Life
New Jersey

Spring Reins of Life (Horses, Humans & Healing) 501(c)(3) is a public charity in Central NJ. We are less than 1 year old. Spring Reins of Life (SROL) was founded in July 2011 and received it tax exempt status in May of 2012. SROL offers EAP (equine assisted psychotherapy) services under the EAGALA Model* to 3 main populations - At Risk Youth, Military Veterans & their Families, and Bereaved Children. There is a 4th category for Addictions which is under development. Currently there is large demand for EAP services for At Risk Youth and PTSD Veterans so that is where our focus and greatest needs are.

Currently we are experiencing the need for some re-organization, as does often happen with new nonprofits. SROL was originally designed to start up as a small nonprofit and to grow slowly and steadily while building its full BOD, funding pool, reputation, research opportunities and more, but all in incremental small steps. That, however is not what is taking place. The entire BOD as well as the Executive Director roles are volunteer only at this time, mainly because we wanted to dedicate all funding toward programming and very base operational expenses. So far we have been funded privately up to 25,000 which was spent on website, EAP insurance, At Risk Youth and Military Veteran (PTSD) programming in the first year. Since starting to offer services SROL has developed a solid and GROWING waiting list for both of these populations. (Currently there are 80+ teens on waiting list for At Risk Youth and 42 and growing for PTSD veterans in NJ).

NPO Book Keeper / Accounting Services:
SROL is seeking an acting or interim Book keeper with NPO accounting experience. This would entail keeping detailed records of deposits, debits and the strict accounting measures that a NPO requires. And also to be able to create a detailed and itemized reports monthly and then annoally for 990 filings.

Currently there are 4 basic areas to keep track of:

1) Funding coming in for PTSD Veterans to recieve EAP services.

2) Funding coming in for At Risk Youth to recieve EAP services.

3) The Straw Fund (a very special horse in our program who came to us in a farm foreclosure and abandonment case...her needs were funded for for 2013 and so that there is a montly accounting of these funds ensuring that she has her money to cover the year and also that it is appropriated as we advertised it would be. Opening / closing balance of each month with a record of the amount spent for each item. For info on Straw Fund see: http://www.springreinsoflife.org/2013/01/24/tystrawfund/

4) Keeping track of the administrative costs and operational costs such as insurance, web site hosting, postage, etc.

This position is currently UN-paid, and would be a volunteer / pro-bono effort to start out.

Seeking someone with the following experience / background:

  • nonprofit experience with accounting, book keeping and banking
  • understanding of nonprofit tax law and what is within a public charities realm with regard to funding and money
  • passionate about the EAGALA model and the EAP work (or very curious at least)
  • compassion for PTSD Veterans and At Risk Youth
  • has some free time on their hands and/or possibly where this initiative could fulfill a piece of the heart that is not about the money/income.

In addition SROL has a research team in place that can begin to take measures, and publish data to enable faster routes to funding and services by proving that EAP makes a big difference for those who dont resonate or respond well with traditional "talk about it" therapy settings. We also realize that these are "very good problems" for a new NPO to have! The future horizons for SROL look very bright and promising, we seek the right leadership to join us now and become part of a wonderful journey...
