The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world's worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in over 40 countries, the IRC leads the way from harm to home by restoring safety, dignity, and hope. Domestically, our 22 offices across the United States (US) ensure that new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency.
The IRC is committed to developing a public health program with the overall goal of maximizing public health awareness, access, and advocacy for all refugee and asylee clients.
SCOPE OF HEALTH PROMOTION & OUTREACH VOLUNTEER WORK:
Refugees and asylees arrive with a wide range of health concerns including malnutrition, TB, parasitic infections, HIV/AIDS, and mental illness. To address these needs, they face the additional problem of navigating the local health system for health care.
The health team seeks to elucidate health care needs, barriers, and resources of refugees and aslyees. The IRC health team hopes to use this information to tailor health education to refugee and asylee interests.
