Volunteer Opportunity description

Volunteer in Peru

Lima is surrounded by pueblos jovenes (young towns) which often lack basic services such as electricity, sanitation, adequate schools and health care. Many families live in informal housing and struggle to make enough money to survive. Children as young as four or five often work alongside their parents doing a variety of tasks such as searching for scrap metal and helping with construction projects. helping with homework in the community center Schools are overcrowded and many teachers are underpaid and underqualified. ELI works with an organization based in Callao, about one hour from Lima's city center, devoted to improving life for the people living in the neighborhood of Fertiza. The organization focuses on improving education opportunities for children, providing health care and health education, and providing nutrition support to the families most in need. Volunteers can assist with a wide variety of projects ranging from tutoring children after school to helping with construction projects and treating children for head lice.

Experience the incredible beauty and culture of Peru while working with local organizations and gaining a deep understanding of the people and culture. Volunteers and interns work in community run organizations, gaining firsthand knowledge of the complex development issues Peru is facing. Participants have plenty of time to explore the country during the weekends. Peru has almost endless possibilities for adventure.
