Catholic Charities of Los Angeles, Inc. is one of the largest human services providers in California and operates 24 community centers, five homeless shelters, as well as a variety of programs serving the poor including: in-home services for homebound seniors; refugee resettlement; youth employment services; counseling; affordable before-and-after school care; immigration assistance; tutoring low-income children; and temporary worker center. In addition, Catholic Charities oversees Catholic Youth Organization (CYO), which coordinates interscholastic athletics for the elementary schools of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

Our newly remodeled Mahar House is seeking Tutors to provide high-level support to our After School Youth Program.

Primary duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist the Site Supervisor in implementing the program curriculum
  • One-on-one or group tutoring to 4th and 5th grade children
  • Supervise and directly interact with children in a warm and positive manner
  • Communicate positively with children, parents, and staff
  • Ensure the safety and health of the children
  • Assist children with homework
  • Participate in preparation of snacks
  • Be responsible for the cleanliness and safety of the classroom
  • Circulate and participate with the children indoors/outdoors
  • Observe and document children according to curriculum activity

We need you anytime between Mon-Fri from 2:30pm-6:00 pm(minimum 2 hours per day). You are not required to volunteer every day, but must be able to commit to days and hours agreed on.

Prior experience as a tutor or working with children is preferred but not required. You will gain work experience and confidence. This is your opportunity to give back to the community and, more importantly, to make a difference in a child's life.

CCLA staff will provide orientation and occasional trainings. We will be happy to provide a letter of recommendation if needed.
