Volunteer Opportunity description

Interpret Heritage's collections for school, community and adult groups by leading interactive, hands-on tours through our galleries and grounds Docents and Horticulture Interpreters at Heritage Museums & Gardens devote time and expertise to student, adult and multi-generation audiences by leading tours through the museum's permanent collections, special exhibitions and gardens. A rigorous training program offers lectures by staff, curators, and specialists. Assigned readings, activities and access to Special Exhibition lectures add to the docent experience and contribute to effective communication about our visual heritage. Volunteer tour guides may choose to complete both Heritage Docent Corp and Horticulture Docent training or they may elect to participate in only one group. Responsibilities: Benefits include: • Expert training in art and cultural history, communication skills, tour techniques, interpretation, and visitor services • Membership to Heritage Museums & Gardens • Participation in a community of active volunteers who are committed to sharing Heritage Museums & Gardens' collections with a broad audience of Cape and Islands residents and visitors. • Free admission to Special Exhibition lectures.

Docents are required to attend an initial intensive training program. Sessions will be conducted for six weeks on specified weekday mornings from 9:00am to 11:00am. Horticulture Interpreter Training will be conducted from 12:00pm to 2:00pm concurrently with Heritage Docent Training. Agree to give permanent collection and special exhibition tours to scheduled groups and/or as stationary gallery guide for a minimum of 20 credit hours per year

5. Ability to stand and walk for a minimum of 90 minutes.
