Teach Chemistry in a Maasai Village, Tanzania

Teach Chemistry in a remote East African village and empower marginalized children with education. Explore Tanzania and experience life in a traditional Maasai community. IEFT has an open position for an experienced volunteer Chemistry teacher.

IEFT (www.ieftz.org) is a community-collaborative non-profit organization that works with rural communities to provide affordable secondary education to indigenous children. IEFT operates Orkeeswa Secondary School in an indigenous Maasai community and provides quality education, health care services, nutritious food and safe water, team sports and extra-curricular activities to over 100 students.

IEFT is looking for an experienced and energetic professional educator to volunteer as a Chemistry teacher at Orkeeswa.

As a Chemistry teacher, you must be able to teach Form I through Form III Chemistry courses. You must be able develop lesson plans, supplements to national curriculum and projects designed to teach various skills to Orkeeswa students. The candidate must be capable of initiating after-school projects designed to provide hands-on learning, teaching students about chemistry and enhancing their knowledge of science, as well as extra-curricular activities such as science club.

Volunteers must have a strong command of the English Language, preferably native speakers. You must be able to work independently and collaborate with a team of international volunteers and local staff. You must have the willingness and ability to be flexible and to cope with challenging living and working conditions in a developing country. Applicants must be able to live and work with little or no running water, unreliable electricity and a lack of Western amenities.

Many volunteers and staff choose to spend their free time exploring some of East Africas treasures, including safaris on the Serengeti Plain, climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro, hiking the Ngorongoro Crater, or relaxing on the beaches of Zanzibar Island. Experience Tanzania's diverse indigenous cultures and traditions, distinct wildlife and breathtaking scenery!

There is no program fee to volunteer with IEFT, however candidates are required to cover their travel and living expenses. Stipends are available for qualified applicants.

IEFT is willing to negotiate the length of the volunteer term, however a 1-year commitment, starting in January 2011 to coincide with the Tanzanian school year, is highly preferred.

You must be at least 21 years old to apply and hold a Bachelor's degree and/or have experience teaching in the classroom.
