Volunteering with underprivileged and orphaned children in Ghana
Volunteer in Ghana's beautiful democratic country. Ghana, working with underprivileged children aged 4 and upwards in care homes, orphanages, summer camps and schools is very interesting and rewarding.
Plan and teach informal, fun and interactive classes with different activities such as art, drama and music to feed the children's hunger to learn.
The project supports younger children through the early years of their educational lives, in a safe and caring environment and older children (up to 18) with basic conversational English, numeracy and skills to prepare their integration into society.
Working with the children is extremely challenging, but very rewarding as every day is full of fun and laughter.
No qualifications are required.
However, volunteers should be
• Willing to work in groups and with local people.
• Willing to work with other volunteers from different countries.
• Culturally adaptable.
No skills are required. English teaching experience, physiotherapy, psychology, teaching, childcare or nursing skills, social work, community work can always be put to good use if available. Project staff speaks English and are available to help translate if and when required into various local dialect where applicable.
This project is not physically demanding but volunteers should make sure their health is in good order.
Ability to speak fluent English would be advantageous but not compulsory.
Each morning you will arrive for breakfast with the team at 7-8am and start your morning session which is from 8am - 12pm.
Morning sessions will be divided into 3 parts with a variety of tasks including outdoor exercises and games, arts and crafts, story-telling, music and drama activities.
You will have an hour from 12 - 1pm to enjoy lunch (optional) before starting the afternoon session which could include supervised free play, assistance with homework or working with some children.
At 4pm in the afternoon you will be required (OPTIONAL) to spend an hour or two each day with the team, preparing for the next days' lessons.
