Volunteer Opportunity description

Centro Presente is a member-driven, statewide organization dedicated to the self-determination and self-sufficiency of the Latin American immigrant community of Massachusetts. Through the integration of community organizing, leadership development and basic services, we strive to give our members a voice and build community power.

At our Adult Education Program, Education for Empowerment, we offer the following classes:

  • ESOL (Basic, Intermediate and Conversational English)
  • Citizenship and Civic Participation
  • Spanish Literacy

Courses are designed to improve skills through dynamic and interactive class settings. The classes reflect Centro Presente's mission regarding immigrant rights and workers' rights. Through the classes students are able to talk about issues relevant to the immigrant experience and develop qualities of leadership and critical thinking skills.

Responsibilities

  • Offer 36 hours of instruction during 9 week cycle (June-August)
  • Prepare Lessons
  • Keep student attendance
  • Attend volunteer teacher orientation
  • Attend teacher meeting(s)
  • Complete final course evaluations
  • Collaborate with Education Organizer and Staff to engage/encourage students in Centro Presente's community organizing work

Qualifications

  • Personal commitment to immigrant rights and/or other social justice issues
  • Commitment to 4hrs per week
  • Basic Spanish skills are helpful (proficiency/fluency is required for some classes)
  • No teaching experience required BUT knowledge of community organizing, teaching/popular education methods highly desirable
