Description

Camp Kesem Augustana is a free, week long summer camp for children ages 6-16 with a parent who has, had, or has passed away from cancer. This organization is run by the student members of Camp Kesem at Augustana College. We are looking for a volunteer to serve as our mental health professional from July 21-27, 2013. Our campsite will be at the Y Camp in Boone, IA. Food and housing will be provided at camp. We will offer a stipend if requested.

Requirements: At least master's-level degree, licensed or working toward licensure (minimum) in counseling, social work, or related field (including child life specialists). Two years of experience is also preferable.

What a mental health professional does at camp:

  • Is a resource for camp staff and leaders to help them better interact and communicate with campers and each other.
  • Is the "mandated reporter" in charge of communicating reportable offenses that we are required by state law to report to law enforcement or social services.
  • Is responsible for any major psychological issues that arise during the week of camp that fall outside of a counselor's control and expertise. Counselors should be open to sharing difficult situations with the therapist and while the therapist will first work to coach and support the counselor or staff member, s/he may need to intercede if the safety of the camper is in danger or if the counselor, camp advisor, and therapist agree that this is the best course of action.
  • Is present for at least a part of counselor orientation and all parts of camp in which campers will be present.
  • The mental health professional should sign all of the required staff paperwork

The mental health professional is part of our staff and will get to participate in activities with counselors and campers. Lodging will be provided for the MHP. He or she will lodge in an air-conditioned cabisn, separate from the campers.

During the day MHP should be around camp with the campers and staff. The MHP is more than welcome to join in on camp activities. Professional Staff are also encouraged to attend staff meetings every night, and provide any updates or concerns from the medical and behavioral views.
