Volunteering to teach in Senegal is a hugely rewarding experience. Placements teaching English, sports, ICT skills are available, as well as teaching life skills to individuals with learning difficulties. Typically, the volunteer in Senegal will work with children of between 4 and 17 years of age, attending one of the poorly resourced schools in Senegal.
Volunteers are not required to hold a formal teaching qualification or TEFL certificate. Whilst experience in Teaching and Education will certainly be advantageous, it is not a prerequisite for these programs, as a volunteers level of involvement within the classroom can be tailored to suit their own skills and interests. A willingness to share and an ability to be proactive in their role as a volunteer teacher will make a valuable addition to any classroom.
After orientation has been completed, the volunteer teacher will be able to teach on his or her own, or, alternatively, may assist local teachers. One significant contribution they will be making is improving the pupils' spoken English. In some instances, this applies to the teachers too, who benefit greatly from the opportunity to talk with native English speakers. Having good English language skills can lead to a brighter future for students and teachers alike.
There are multiple schools in Yoff and Pikine that volunteers can work at. Each has its own needs due to lack of funding and resources and are open to volunteers bringing whatever skills they have to the children. A lot of the schools are beginning to develop sustainable projects such as gardening and farming, volunteers are welcome to help to develop these projects.
